Nice Dress! (It's Not a Dress)

It's not that I am slamming a compliment - I love compliments! thank you! - but when a dozen people say, "Nice dress!" to you over 8 hours, and you are not wearing a dress...it wears on you a little.
Especially when you are a nitpicky person or a stickler or a rules-monkey (yes, yes, and yes, I am all those things). But these are separates, people. A top and a bottom.

  • Blouse - no label, thrifted; last seen here under Vivienne Westwood in November 2017
  • Skirt - Maeve, thrifted; last worn here with colourful Gookey in November 2017 (I love that outfit)
  • Shoes - Big Presence Earhart, Fluevog; first worn here in January in a classic combo
  • Leather trenchcoat (below) - no label, vintage 70s, thrifted; last seen here in January

I do one of two things when I'm uninspired with getting dressed (it happens when I'm tired): I wear a dress, or I build an outfit around one of my LOVE items. This skirt is one of my LOVE items.
I've had it for years (I only paid $16.95 for it in 2015!), and I love every single outfit I've done with it. I have done a white shirt with it before (here in July 2016), but I really liked these shoes with it, and then the white shirt made sense to showcase the skirt and shoes.
The white shirt has that nice menswear vibe that helps balance all this pouffy stuff. I had a lot of very strong positive reactions to this outfit in general. I did a couple of twirls for my WW group.

Outerwear - stoopid rain. I hate carrying an umbrella, but it was too much rain for my hair in a hat.
I liked the pink accessories against the caramel of the leather.

  • Pashmina - Portolano, thrifted for $9.95 - first wear!
  • Leather gloves - consignment

The cashmere/silk pashmina was snuggly warm!

The stuff:
I struggled with finding a belt to go with this outfit. I didn't want to wear my orange one again - it was too much orange, once I'd decided on these shoes. I loved wearing these shoes again! Winners.

Forgotten bling:
While I was rooting around in my belt boxes, I remembered that I had this crazy 80s elastic-backed corset belt - it was in the upper costume area of my closet! I first (and last) wore it here in April 2012 for the Victoria Steampunk Convention, and bought it for only $5.50. Ah, memories - that's a rabbit-hole of a post, by the way (you have been warned).

  • Belt - vintage 80s, thrifted
  • Necklace - thrifted
  • Gold/amethyst ring - Frances Jewellers, c. 1965, Dad's
  • Amber ring - c. 1996
  • Earrings - Jacob
I'd also forgotten about this necklace! So glad I spotted both of these things, hiding in plain sight.

  1. How strange that, of all things, people thought this was a dress! It's so very clearly a skirt and a white shirt. I mean, there are dresses that pretend to be a skirt and a white shirt, but surely it's not more reasonable to assume this is one of those than than it is what it appears to be. Poor Sheila, I get it! Your outfit is superb, no one might imagine you'd felt uninspired.

  4. So perfectly paired together people thought it was made that way! I've had a few people do that on occasion, you're right it gets grating after a while!

I love the belt and skirt together, in fact all of it is so perfect together!

  5. That skirt is truly fabulous, Sheila, and I think you paired it perfectly with the simple white shirt. I never thought it was a dress, though. Those elastic-backed corset belts are actually quite comfy to wear. I have a couple of them too, and I also have boxes and boxes of belts, so I'm glad I'm not alone. And wow: those shoes! I love the pairing of lilac and orange, which is quite unusual. xxx

    1. I love lilac and orange together - such a great combo. I was so happy to find this belt again - it was indeed very comfy to wear. I only have two boxes of belts - that's not too bad, is it? Ha!

  7. This skirt is way at the top of my favourite pieces of yours too sweetie. And the shoes are just perfect with it too. I'm kinda like you about these type of compliments and can't help but correct people which does seem to spoil the whole intention, aaarh.

    1. I know, right?? I want to correct them, but it really deflates the compliment. Oops!

  8. It does not look like a dress.. and I am wondering if you have a lavender sweater or similar to pair this with. So it can be super matchy matchy and go with those spectacular shoes.

    1. No, I look horrible in lavender - it's not a great colour near my face. I might do a pale pink, though. Mmmm....matchy!
