Weekend Wrap-Up: Winesday, Vintage-ing and Pink Sparkle

Hello! I hope everyone's been having a fun weekend! I sure have! And I feel like I've barely seen L all weekend, so forgive me but here we go.

Saturday! This is my pre- and post-Ultimate Frisbee game outfit. I take all of this off at the field and get dressed in my workout pants, t-shirt, soccer cleats and a Carolina Panthers ball cap. I even change my classes, and of course, all the jewelry is off.
I do play with make-up on, though. I wear much lighter make-up: cover-up, powder, eyeliner, mascara, a bit of eyeshadow, blush and lip gloss - ha, I guess that is actually quite a bit, but I do it very quickly! I like to put my best foot forward, even during the game!

No stair shot that morning, as the ratty carpeting in the stairwell is getting replaced. How exciting!

This pink top was last seen here with bark in June. I love the cowl neckline - and it actually managed to look good with my sports bra on under it (not always a given).
My parachute skirt is so comfy. I've had it for ages, and I keep stepping on the edges, which cause some of the little seams that gather it to rip, so it's getting even longer. It's only worn on weekends - in fact, the last time I wore it was here in May, when I wore it to Ultimate and to Winesday.

After Ulty, I did a small grocery shop, cleaned the house, showered had a nap and got ready to host Winesday - L headed off for a night with the menfolk. I made white wine sangria, and put on a massive spread of cheeses, and my awesome girlfriends also brought food and wine. We hung out until the wee hours. It was wonderful!

The stuff:
Simple shiny pieces. I quite like these Born shoes. They are like wearing slippers. I last wore them here (2nd outfit) earlier this month with clamdiggers.

Top (Liz Claiborne, thrifted), skirt (Cute Options), shoes (Born, thrifted), necklace (consignment), earrings (real gold, gift from L).

I was good and interspersed water with my wine, so even after a 2am bedtime I was able to drag my butt out of bed and get ready to meet up with Cat and Elaine for a Vintage Fair at Point Ellice House.
Boo-yah! None more orange than that dress.

You can see the sections of the stairs still waiting for carpet. I might have to wait until after work to do a stair shot tomorrow, if the workers are there early.
I would have had a better hairdo, but I ran out of hairspray.

I last wore this crazy dress here in April with silver and turquoise.
I belted it this time, which made it slightly more flattering, but it may be time to pass this craziness on to someone else. It's a novelty dress, and it doesn't do wonderful things for my figure, I know.

The stuff:
Another pair of shoes that I don't 100% love but perform a useful function (that of the white walkable shoe) in my wardrobe. The silver insides are starting to come off on my feet when I wear them, but I'll see if I can stretch them until the summer is over. They were last seen here (2nd outfit), in yet another outfit I wore to the Ulty field. Ha, I sense a theme!

Vintage bling:
I love wearing my mom's belt.

I actually wore a white cardigan over all of this business, but I was rushing for the bus and forgot to take an outfit shot of it. Fear not, there's another shot of me coming.

Dress (Berkertex, thrifted), belt (vintage 60s, Mom's), shoes (Aerosoles, thrifted), earrings (thrifted).

Cat, Elaine and I all met up on the bus to go to the Vintage Market on the grounds of Point Ellice House*.
*links 'cause I love, of course!
It's an old heritage house filled with the family's Victorian-era belongings. I've done an audio tour in the past, and you can have English tea on the lawns. It's a cool location but it's right in the middle of one of the biggest industrial areas on Victoria's Inner Harbour waterway.

The house:
Many of the roses and the collection in the hollyhock garden are the original plants from the late 19th century.

Overall, it was warm but overcast, so many of the vendors had white tents up in case of rain. We lucked out and it even got sunny for a bit.
There was a LOT of this repurposed non-vintage housewares stuff. Not really my cup of tea.

I admire the attempt, but yeah...
Really not my taste.

We got there quite early, before it got really crowded.
The grounds are very pretty, and vendors were set  up all over.
There were huge fava beans growing in this garden.

Around the other side of the house were more booths and tents.
We stayed for about an hour and checked everything out.
It started to get busy and we were getting hungry.

I loved these masses of colourful bouquets.
I made Elaine and Cat pose. We all had orange our outfits!

They insisted I sit next to this bed of nasturtiums.
See? White cardigan.

I really liked the label on this old steamer trunk.
Dr. Troup traveled First Class, and left this trunk in the cargo hold - "Not Wanted on the Voyage".

I meandered away from the crowds to look at the waterfront.
That twisty tree is an arbutus - they are native to this area. That waterway is the Gorge, where I did dragonboating a few years ago (check it out, 2009, yo).

Looking south, to the Bay Street Bridge.
There's a lot of new development, particularly condos going up in this area.

And looking north:
Little "pickle-boats" ferry people around from dock to dock for about the same cost as a cab. Point Ellice House has a dock.

However, caught the bus back to town. Looking towards town.
The Point Hope Shipyards and some very unattractive gravel pits.

Cat is an adventurous woman!
We were having so much fun clowning around that we nearly missed the bus.

We had caesars and mimosas with our delicious breakfast. I am obsessed with this painting in the restaurant.
I am convinced that this painting - and it is a paint-by-numbers, by the way - is the one that hung in our house when I was a kid. Mom, I need to know about this! The painting fascinated me as a kid, and I love seeing it again. The whole restaurant is decorated with a collection of paint-by-numbers pieces.

I did buy one awesome thing at the Vintage Market:
Well, I also bought a 50 cent amber glass but it's not very exciting. This? Exciting!

Let's look at it again:
SO. SPARKLY. I think my heart is going to explode from pink sparkly crystals! I have a clear crystal necklace that belonged to my mother-in-law (rarely worn, last time here, in 2011), but this is The Empress of Crystal Necklaces. And with earrings! I spotted it in a box with some other items, but no price on it. I inquired, and was told...$22.00. That's a bargain! The necklaces sell for around $100.00 - 250.00!

And to have the earrings...
Hurray! They're stamped "Sherman"! I didn't even realize this until we were having lunch! I got a great deal on this set. I can't wait to wear it.

Phew! Well, there you go. My exciting weekend.

  1. Oh ermagersh Sheila!!!! Sherman earrings and necklace for $22.00!!! What a major score! And, they are so very pretty. A lot of Sherman is too blingy for my personal taste, but this set is perfection!

Crazy dress? Um, where? I LOVE that orange dress, and you wear it with fabulousness!

Funny about the painting. The first thing I thought was paint by numbers...hahaha...and then I scrolled down to read your comment, paint by numbers!

What a nice newsy post. I've not yet been to Point Ellice House. But, now you've got me thinking about a house we would visit in the Victoria area. It was on the ocean, maybe near Oak Bay, and very hobbity. The roof was curved, and all the furniture inside was handmade. Gosh, I wish I could remember more about that magical little place. Do you know it? If not, I wonder if Leslie might.

    1. Sue, that was Fable Cottage! They actually uprooted it and floated it away to Denman Island. I remember going there as a kid - there were creepy gnomes all over the place.

  4. Loved this newsy post! I have a similar necklace from my grandma. I wore it onstage. It sparkled the house down.
I also like the orange dress, and the white shoes. How cool to have your Mum's belt! This weekend seemed full of girlfriend fun. Just as it should be :-) XO JJ

  5. I'm with Sue, I love the orange Berkertex dress too it's fabulous! Elaine and Cat's dresses are pretty wonderful as well.
Point Ellice House looks lovely, what a good location for a vintage fair. I get irritated with all the paint-the-wooden-furniture-and-pretend-it's-old stuff too, not my cup of tea either.
The pink crystal set is just beautiful! xxx

  6. Oh I wish we had more of these markets here. We have like, one a year ? if we get lucky.
I have to say that I agree with you, as much fab as the orange dress is, I would pass it on. You have a marvellous figure and this garment does not do justice to it.
