Black for Grandma, and the Funky Chicken

Yesterday, L and I spent the day going to to his grandma's memorial. It was a 3 hour drive, then over an hour on the ferry (and of course, you have to wait for the ferry) - each way! We got up at 5am and didn't get home until 10pm. I'm still exhausted.

I like to wear mostly black for memorials/funerals:
I've only worn this dress once (here) - I know, shameful. It's a wicked dress.

Because Grandma was a Wonder Woman, this one's for her!
The dress has a tie belt, which I've tied into a bigass bow. Usually, I toss such belts and use my own, but I really like the look of the bow.

I added the blue suede shoes, my Dad's scarf, and my yellow jacket in case it got chilly:
It did not, but I looked very chic carrying around my yellow jacket all day. I tied the scarf to the strap of my black bag.

Dress (Esprit), jacket (Danier Leather), shoes (Feet First), scarf (60s vintage), earrings (don't remember), cuff (St. Paul's Cathedral, London).

Today, back to work. I picked up this dress for $9.99 at Dots while I was waiting for the bus to get my hair cut on Monday night:
Classic! I am also thrilled that it does not wrinkle (and it's 100% cotton, go figure) across the bum from sitting at my desk.

I layered my floopy skirt under it (worn layered before here and here) for fun and to show off my awesome yellow boots (as previously seen here, here, here, here, and here).

It was only when I realized that I sort of resembled a chicken. Bu-kawk!
I'm a bit more Super Chicken than Wonder Woman today!

The skirt floofed out when I walked:
I felt like dancing!

The stuff:
Yep, those are yellow boots! Yellow boots!

A close-up:
The leather cuff is new too. It was $3.99 at Dots.

Dress (Coupe), skirt (no label, consignment), belt (Plum), boots (Aldo, consignment), cuff (Dots), earrings (Shi Studio).

  1. Oh wow yet some more fabulous outfits I mean come on do you ever have a bad day where you don't look good tehehehehe!!! The black dress is so pretty and looks like a great wardrobe staple to have. And those yellow boots what can I say they are off the hook. I only wish we were neighbors with the same shoe size lol ~Heather

  3. It's a gorgeous dress. You should definitely wear it more.

The yellow boots are seriously omg awesome. I've loved all the outfits you wore the boots with. They sure make an impression! But a super fun cheery one.

Congrats on the new digs. I nearly bought a similar leather cuff yesterday.

  4. I LOVE how you wore that shirt dress! I wore mine yesterday (I'm now doing a 1 week delay on my posts, so look forward to it next week!!), and it just didn't seem to work for me - the skirt wasn't a-line enough. I can't believe I didn't think of layering a dress UNDER it!

You looked very chic at the memorial - I hope the service was a fitting way to honour L's grandmother's life!

  5. Being such a LBD person myself, I was stuck on the first ensemble of your post. I thought the accessories most attractive and appropriate. It DID sound like a very long day.

I'm still digesting the yellow boots :) They are fabulous!

I love those yellow boots, and they look especially fantastic paired with that khaki dress!

  7. i love the bow on that dress! i'm thinking a lot recently about coming up with some simple, basic flexible type dress pattern... i'm very drawn to self fabric ties at the waist. this look is a BIG push in that direction! & nice look for giving grandma a proper send off.

yay crinoline! i'm finally finishing up a petticoat crinoline i started about a month ago....it must be crinoline day : )

  8. Wow I love that second dress. (actually both of them look great)

I was looking for a shirt dress this year, but the only one I came across was $68 on sale!! too much for me, (thrifting spoils you) your 9.99 deal is way better.

Those yellow boots would brighten up a dull rainy Vancouver day.

  9. Sorry about your loss.
This black dress looks absolutely amazing but my favorite was the Funky Chicken pose and look.

  11. I also wanted to express my sympathies about your loss. And also my admiration that you looked great for the memorial service.
As for the super chicken- I didn't think you looked like a chicken at all, but you do look funky in a good way. The dance is just awesome.

  13. I'm so sorry about L's grandma; I love that you did a Wonder Woman pose in her honor, and the outfit is just perfect for a memorial service.

  14. Thanks, Heather! Yes, I have plenty of bad days, but just not fashion-wise.

    Cynthia, agreed!

Megan, thanks - it's not really a work dress, so I tend to save it for other occasions. I know, the boots are killer!

Thanks, Cara! I will look for your shirtdress.

Rebecca, thanks - I was actually very overdressed (I can't believe what people will wear to a funeral! It's disrespectful).

LaHdM, thank you. I love the boots too!

Steph, thanks! This is a really basic dress, but it has just enough details to satisfy me. Yay for crinolines!

Thanks, Northmoon! I usually don't go for shirtdresses, but hey, $9? Don't you have Dots in Vancouver? You're so close! Let me know if you come to the Island and I'll take you shopping. :)

Lorena, thanks! I enjoy the silly poses.

    Cat, thanks!

Thanks, Rad. I felt chickeny - and one must dance when one feels the mood strike!

Thanks, shybiker. Aw, thank you - that's so sweet. :)

Audi, thanks. I am really starting to feel like a Wonder Woman! I knew you'd like the boots.
